What rules are used for high school games?

The National Federation of High School Sports created the first NFHS Flag Football Rules Book in May 2025. High school games are played under that rule set.

Where are games played?

Games are played at high school sites either on the school's football field or another field space. Field dimensions are smaller than tackle football and lines are created specifically for the flag football game. The NC Flag Football Association currently assigns officials for high school games in the counties of Wake, Durham, Johnston, Lee, Vance, Wilson and Nash.

What is the game schedule?

Generally, teams play 2-3 days a week with most weekday games taking place Monday-Wednesday evenings and various tournaments on Saturday. Most conferences use a Super Site format where multiple visiting teams travel to the same school with each team playing at least two games in a day. Officials will be normally be scheduled for 2-4 games at a site per day. Common weekday game times are 4pm/5pm/6pm/7pm for quads and 5pm/6pm/7pm for triples.

How much are officials paid?

Current rates for high school flag football officials are $50/game for 3-person crews. Officials are assigned 2-4 games in a row totaling $100-$200 per assignment on average.

How are games assigned?

Officials can submit their availability by blocking off dates they cannot work. Games will be scheduled on DragonFly and normally will come out in 2-3 week batches. Availability is a big asset as an official. The more days you have available during the season, the more games you are likely to get assigned.
